Lim: IGP, A-G should clarify scrapping of indelible ink - The Star

PENANG: May 19, 2008

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan and Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail should explain to the people the claim that the plan to use indelible ink in the recent general election had to be scrapped for public safety and legal reasons, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Lim, who is DAP secretary-general, said Sunday that both were present at the press conference by Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman a few days before polling day when he announced that police reports had been made about a plan to sabotage the election process with the use of the ink.

“Abdul Rashid said at the time that the cancellation of the use of the ink was because it could affect national security, and both the IGP and the A-G agreed with this,” he said at the opening of state executive councillor Abdul Malik Abul Kassim’s new service centre in his Batu Maung constituency.

On May 6, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said in a Parliament reply to DAP’s Batu Gajah MP Fong Po Kuan that police did not find evidence of smuggled indelible ink, and statements made by complainants and witnesses were rumours.
