Shocked and deeply troubled over the arrest of blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin under the Internal Security Act (ISA), the Bar Council has called for his immediate release, together with other detainees.
Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said the Malaysian Bar had consistently denounced the ISA as draconian and undemocratic, and believed that the preventive detention laws should not be invoked under any circumstances.
”The Bar Council is equally perturbed that three newspapers (Sin Chew Daily, The Sun and Suara Keadilan) have been issued show-cause letters today over their news coverage.
”This, together with the arrest of Raja Petra under the ISA, may be viewed as a chilling message that our fundamental freedoms are not secure,” she said in a statement Friday.
Ambiga said if an offence had allegedly been commited, the individual concerned must be charged in court and given a fair opportunity to defend himself.
”We agree with the view reportedly expressed by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim on Thursday, when he disagreed with the call for the use of the ISA on Datuk Ahmad Ismail, saying that this ‘will have a huge effect on ... the rule of law’ and that he should therefore, ‘go through the normal process of law’,” she said.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has expressed great concern over Raja Petra’s arrest.
Three Suhakam commissioners Tan Sri Simon Sipaun, Datuk Michael Yeoh and Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria in a statement Friday said although Suhakam appreciated the Government’s responsibility in maintaining peace and stability, the commission had consistently held that the ISA and other preventive laws should be abolished.
They also expressed concern over the warning letters issued to the three newspapers as it was a curtailment of freedom of expression. - Bernama

We anticipated that this might happen as "history" of umno have always uses the ISA .
Students might not go to school on Monday or the entire week as for sure there will be multiple road blocks everywhere.
The detention of RPK , Teresa and a reporter and more ( there will be more detained under the ISA ) will sent a much needed strong message to Sabahan and Sarawakian .
Gerakan and MCA you better take note of this.As its not too late to change your stance.

Royalties must have an emergency meeting now before this issue gets out of hand.Either call for calm or calls for a new election.
A fresh election will be good enough to settle the dust. As without the people there will be no royalties.
As it is very simple , no country means no rakyat means no more royalty means no more palaces.
The people do notices that the royalties remained awfully quiet .

MCA AND GERAKAN LEADERS ARE TOO COWARD TO DEFEND THEIR OWN RACE AND INNOCENT VICTIMS FROM BEING TORTURED UNDER ISA. SIMILAR MIC LEADERS ARE SILENT ON THE PAIN SUFFERED BY THEIR OWN GOOD PROFESSIONAL INDIANS. SIMILAR MANY MALAY ISA DETAINESS ALSO SUFFERED FOR MANY YEARS WITHOUT TRIALS FROM THEIR OWN KETUANAN MELAYU LEADERS.
MALAYSIANS ARE TOO "KIASI AND KIASU" COWARD ATTITUDE TO STAND TALL IN DEFENDING THEIR OWN RIGHTS.
THEREFORE THE SELFISH POLITICIANS & THE WORST PERPETRATORS UNDERSTAND VERY WELL , HENCE THEY ARE ABUSING ISA LAW AS A LAST RESORT FOR THEIR POLITICAL SURVIVAL.
OPERATIONS "ISA" ON RAJA PETRA, TERESA KOK AND TAN CH AND TO CLAMP DOWN ON OTHER INNOCENT VICTIMS IN THE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN ARE VERY SINFUL ACT AGAINST HUMAN RIGHTS.
LET US BE UNITED AND CALM FOR PEACE TO LET PAKATAN RAKYAT TO TAKE OVER THE GOVERNMENT AND ABOLISH ISA IMMEDIATE WITHOUT CONDITIONS TO RELEASE ALL INNOCENT VICTIMS BEHIND ISA BARS NOW.
MALAYSIANS COUNT ON MPs FROM BOTH BN AND PAKATAN RAKYAT TO SUPPORT DATO SERI ANWAR TO REALISE THE NATION DREAM FOR CHANGE IN MALAYSIA WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
