Kelantan wants its federal dept abolished too - The Star

KOTA BARU: Jun 3, 2008 By IAN McINTYRE

Now that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has announced the abolition of the Federal Development Department (JPP) in Sabah, Kelantan is hoping for a similar consideration.

Local Government committee chairman Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said the state welcomed Abdullah’s decision on Sabah, and wants the government to abolish Kelantan's JPP as well.

The JPP was established in Kelantan after Barisan Nasional was defeated by PAS in the 1990 general election.

The Federal Government should allocate development funds directly to state governments even if they were governed by the Opposition, Takiyuddin said.

"With direct funding, development can be carried out faster and in a more orderly fashion, unlike now where the JPP needs to oversee or approve any development project first," he said at the PCB Resort here.

While acknowledging that the Kelantan JPP had played a role in developing the state, he said it had resulted in overlapping duties and more bureaucracy.
