Sazmi: Umno Youth is split

The Star - June 1, 2008

PETALING JAYA:

One-third of Umno Youth's members had different opinions from the top leadership, said the movement’s exco member Datuk Sazmi Miah.

“Not all of us agree with the decisions made by the top leadership and we hope to bring about changes for the betterment of all.

“Actually there is a split among us, but Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has given us the freedom to express our views due to the current political crisis,” he said when answering a question from the floor during a forum entitled “Suntikan Semangat Satria” at a hotel here yesterday.

He was responding to a participant's query why there were no “lions” among those in the wing, but there were definitely many parrots.

The former Natural Resources and Environment Ministry parliamentary secretary said he agreed to be a speaker at the forum, as he wanted to get the feedback from the people on what changes needed to be made.

“With the current scenario, we need to find a new form of unity and until we find one, the situation will continue to be shaky.

“The floodgates have been opened. We need to see and find what needs to be done, and therefore we need feedback.

“And if there is any sincerity in 'repairing' the party and to see Tun (Dr Mahathir Mohamed) joining Umno again, I have to do what is right,” he added.

The other speakers at the forum were former MP Datuk Ruhanie Ahmad, currently a blogger. Dr Mahathir delivered a speech at the function yesterday.
