Karpal: It's not a step in the right direction - The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: Jun 16, 2008

Pas does not have the right to extend the syariah lifestyle to Penang, Perak and Selangor, said DAP chairman Karpal Singh.

Such a move would have negative implications and consequences and was not a step in the right direction, he added yesterday.

He was commenting on a report that Pas was pursuing its plan to introduce the Islamic lifestyle in both states it controls and those run by its political partners, Parti Keadilan Rakyat and DAP.

Pas Youth vice-chief Azman Shapawi Abdul Rani had said in Kota Baru on Saturday that the party wanted to carry out the implementation of the syariah lifestyle as it had promised to do so during the general election.

However, Azman admitted the party's limitation in carrying out widespread change as it only had full control over Kelantan and Kedah, while Selangor, Penang and Perak were being held with their partners, PKR and DAP.

Karpal said that what Pas did in Kelantan and Kedah, did not give it the right to extend the syariah lifestyle to Penang, Perak and Selangor.

He said Pas should be positive in its efforts to ensure that Pakatan Rakyat got the majority support from non-Muslims in the country.

The mandate given to Pakatan Rakyat in the March 8 general election by the people did not include extending the syariah lifestyle to the three states, he said.

Malaysia is for all of us , tak kira you bangsa apa, suku mana , sakat mana .
If PAS really into religion , please dont enter politics.
PR is all about serious matters running the country.
This country will goes down the toilet very soon if nobody cares on how to revives the economy and built a safer country for our future.
When everything falls and fails , holding a quran in your hand and going to mosque wont helps you nor able to feed your family.
For us as the public and voters , we are only concern on how to feed the family today , tommorrow and beyond.
Religion cant and wont brings food to my table, that is for sure.
Better for PR to concentrate running the country and do a good service to the public.
Public are concerned about the cost of living, security and justice.
Religion topic is a waste of time. And religious topics scares the living daylights out of us and we will NOT vote for PAS the next round.
Hopefully PAS understand as to why non muslims voted for PAS.
We wanted a change but not change into a muslim country.
