DEWAN RAKYAT: Azmin speaks out in defence of Anwar - NST

May 7, 2008

THE final decision to expel Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak) from Umno in the mid-90s was made by the Umno Supreme Council and not by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was then the party's deputy president.

Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak) said Tajuddin was given an opportunity to state his case to the Umno Technical Committee On Discipline.

"He was given a chance to explain his position to the committee which made its recommendation to the Supreme Council which then expelled him," Azmin said in the Parliament's lobby yesterday.

He said Anwar, now the defacto PKR chief, did not have a hand in the matter as was claimed by Tajuddin.

"I am stating this simply because he (Tajuddin) mentioned Anwar's name in the House.

"It is best that he clarifies matters with the Umno headquarters," Azmin said.

On Monday, Tajuddin had insinuated that Anwar was involved in corrupt practices and was instrumental in getting him sacked from Umno.

Azmin in defending Anwar, said his boss was clean and nothing like an Umno division chief who spent RM6 million to get elected to his post.

"He was prepared to spend RM6 million to become a division chief," he said without naming anyone.

However, Tajuddin assumed that Azmin was talking about him and shot back:

"I have been waiting for this moment. I am ready to tell my side of the story. I was maligned by Anwar who wanted to become the prime minister and conspired with the menteri besar. I was victimised."

He called on Azmin to repeat his allegations outside the House where he would not be protected by parliamentary immunity.

Azmin said he did not have to repeat anything outside as he never named Tajuddin.

"I did not name him. I am merely defending Datuk Seri Anwar," he said.

Tajuddin said he had been cleared of any wrongdoing after he appealed against the dismissal.

"I was reinstated by the party in 1998."

He said he had helped Anwar's rise in the party.

"I helped him win the Umno Youth position back in 1982. I paid the price as he had other political priorities.
