Someone has to take responsibility for the indelible ink fiasco, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) said yesterday.
Committee member Liew Chin Tong said this was necessary as Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman was claiming he was instructed by Cabinet to do away with the use of the ink while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Amad Badawi was saying that it was only a suggestion."Someone must own up. Bersih also wants to reiterate its call for the setting up of a Royal Commission for Electoral Reform, a suggestion advocated even before the March 8 general election."
Liew said the royal commission was needed to examine issues, problems and loopholes in the system.
He added that Abdul Rashid had contravened the Constitution by taking instructions from the cabinet as the EC was supposed to be an independent commission mandated by the Constitution.
"There is no point asking Abdul Rashid to step down now as he has only one more year of service. All we want is to know the actual scenario."
