Kit Siang takes authorities to task - NST

KUALA LUMPUR: May 7, 2008

DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang has questioned the motives of the authorities in charging blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin under the Sedition Act 1948 for a posting on the Altantunya Shaariibuu murder case.

The member of parliament for Ipoh Timur said any such offence should be treated as contempt of court and dealt with by the presiding judge in the murder trial.

Lim, speaking during the debate on the King's speech, said the move by the police and the prosecution implied an orchestrated response to Raja Petra's blog.

Lim agreed that since the posting insinuated the involvement of the deputy prime minister, his press secretary had the right to say in his response to Raja Petra that they reserved the right to take legal action.

The deputy prime minister should have chosen civil litigation, he said.

Lim asked whether the government was willing to set up an independent investigation or a royal commission of inquiry on the allegations made in the posting.

Lim also complained about the arrest of DAP MP for Kota Melaka Sim Tong Him and two DAP assemblymen, Goh Leong Sin (Kesidang) and Lim Jak Wong (Bachang), in Malacca last week.

The three were removing metal rods from an abandoned site for a telecommunications tower when they were held.

"What crime had the three DAP elected representatives committed when they were acting to protect the safety of the public, particularly school children, to justify the police treating them like common criminals, even handcuffing, assaulting and kicking them?"

He said such actions had undermined public confidence in the police.
