PENANG (May 02, 2008): By Himanshu Bhatt
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has expressed regret over police's use of excessive force on DAP members in Malacca who were arrested for allegedly removing metal rods from a proposed communications pole.
At least one of the three, who were all later released, was physically assaulted by the police, Lim stressed.
He alleged that the person was kicked by a senior police officer.
“I hope the IGP will take action and investigate this,” he said.
Bachang assemblyman Lim Jak Wong has alleged that he was assaulted while in the lock-up. The other two who were arrested were State DAP chairman Goh Leong San and Kota Melaka MP Sim Tong Him.
Lim also called on the senior officer to be suspended once the investigation is done.
“Violence and force are unacceptable. If this officer can do this, it paints a bad picture for the police force. If someone in his position can hit someone, other officers will follow suit. If someone is arrested, does it necessarily mean he has to be beaten?”
The three men have maintained that they were responding to complaints by residents due to the danger the rods posed to children and passers-by.
