GEORGE TOWN, Thurs: April 24, 2008 By Lee Keng Fatt
The MIC has called on the government to explain how the five leaders of the Hindu Rights Action Force, now being detained under the Internal Security Act, pose a threat to the nation’s security.
Party Youth chief S.A. Vigneswaran said the five should be released if the authorities could not come up with an answer.
"If their detention is simply because of their involvement in street demonstrations, the government should release them immediately. Otherwise, the people should be told what kind of a threat the five pose to national security," he said.
The five, M. Manoharan, P. Uthayakumar, V. Ganabatirau, R. Kengadharan, and K. Vasantha Kumar have been slapped with a two-year detention order by the Home Ministry.
They were detained on Dec 13 last year following their involvement in a street demonstration in Kuala Lumpur on Nov. 25.
Vigneswaran said the party's call for the release of the five did not mean the MIC condoned street demonstrations.
He explained that the MIC initially supported action against the Hindraf group to defuse the situation then.
However, he said the Indian community went against the MIC and also the Barisan Nasional because of what happened.
He said the MIC would explain to the people what the five had done for the community compared to the services provided by the MIC over the last 50 years.
Vigneswaran was speaking after meeting state MIC Youth members at a brain-storming session in a hotel at Tanjung Bungah.
He said the party would be setting up a toll free number as a channel for its members to voice their problems more effectively.
MIC Youth will also form a task force to receive complaints from the public and an e-team to counter accusations and allegations raised by the opposition against BN component parties.
