Three DAP elected representatives were arrested and detained for more than five hours today at the Central Malacca police station.
They were Kota Melaka MP Sim Tong Hin, Kesidang state assemblyperson Goh Leong San and the Bachang state rep Lim Jak Wong.
They were arrested in Kampung Lapan, Malacca and expected to be charged under sect 440 of the Penal Code for causing mischief in illegal assembly, according to Kota Laksamana state rep Betty Chew.
Chew was also present at the police station to provide moral support for his party colleagues who were arrested.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Lim said they were arrested after removing the nuts and bolts that were attached to metal posts used for a new telecommunication tower that will be built there.
“Six days before the general election, BN candidates of Kesidang, Koh Nai Kwong and Kota Melaka Wong Nai Chee made a statement in Kampung Lapan itself that the project for the telecommunication tower was cancelled, but suddenly they started building it.
“We received a lot of complaints from the residents and we need to take action”, he added, saying that the towers are being built in a housing area.
He also explained the same project was cancelled in Taman Kota Laksamana, but he claimed that around midnight three weeks ago, it was already being built without any prior notice.
“There was not even a project signage at the site”, he added.
Only one handcuffed
Lim claimed that plainclothes police officers were there during the footing removal at 10am but did not do anything except to take photos of them.
“After about one hour, they arrested the three of us but I’m the only one who was handcuffed”, said Lim.
“Sim and Goh followed me to the station but they too were arrested”, he added.
About 20 to 30 residents were at the site during the incident to help the elected representatives clear the site footing.
After being locked up for one hour and having changed into prison uniform, Lim claimed that he was assaulted during an interrogation by the OCPD (whom he named).
“I was kicked in my legs and had to go to the hospital to get treatment”, he said after all the three of them were released at about 5pm.
Still in a state of shock, Lim calmly said the arrest was “unexpected.”
