HOME Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar was criticised by Karpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor) over a question on the status of B.S.A. Tahir, who was detained under the Internal Security Act. Karpal had asked if Tahir would be given a fair trial under Section 73 of the Act.
Instead of replying to Karpal, Syed Hamid said Tahir's detention had been extended from two years to four after his case was reviewed by his ministry.
Karpal protested and he was supported by several Pakatan Rakyat MPs, who accused Syed Hamid of being elusive.
The minister had earlier replied to a question by Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir (BN-Jerlun) on why Tahir was considered a threat to national security.
He said Tahir's detention was based on an intelligence report that linked him with an international network dealing with nuclear weapon technology for Libya.
"The report stated that Malaysia was being used to supply centrifugal devices. He is also connected to the Abdul Qadir Khan network responsible for turning Pakistan into a nuclear nation," said Syed Hamid, adding that the network was also responsible for the development of nuclear weapons in Iran and Libya.
He said if Tahir was not arrested under the ISA, Malaysia would be seen as a country that went against the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Well he has been released now.
But it really makes you wonder, was this guy put away for 4 whole years to keep his mouth shut, or because he was genuinely a threat to security?
