GEORGE TOWN: May 3, 2008
Bukit Gelugor Member of Parliament Karpal Singh yesterday gave notice to the Dewan Rakyat to discuss the necessity of attending to the medical condition of one of the five Hindraf members currently detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in Kamunting.
Karpal, in his notice under Standing Order 18, urged the House to grant him leave to adjourn the House to discuss the motion on May 6.
"P. Uthayakumar is one of the Hindraf leaders detained under ISA. He is suffering from a serious heart condition which requires immediate medical attention," he said.
Karpal said a specialist doctor at the camp had confirmed that the detainee's heart condition merited referral to the National Heart Institue (IJN) immediately.
He said this was revealed by one of Uthayakumar's lawyers, N. Surendran, who met the detainee at the camp on April 29.
