Former Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) deputy president Rustam A. Sani passed away at 3am Wednesday. He was 64.
The noted academician, newspaper columnist, poet and writer was early to the blogging scene with his Vox Populi and Suara Ku.
He was the vice-president of PRM when it merged with Parti Keadilan Nasional to form Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), and then sat on the new party's leadership council till poor health forced him to take a less active role.
Described as one of Malaysia's leading intellectuals, he has served on Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaya and the Institute of Strategic and International Studies.
In the late 1980s, he was awarded the prestigious Hadiah Sastera Negara (National Literary Award).
The funeral will be held this afternoon after Zohor prayers. His home is in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur.
