KUCHING, TUES: April 22, 2008
Five-term Santubong Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar today confirmed that his name is in the list to be elected as one the two Deputy Speakers of the Dewan Rakyat.
He said apart from himself, three-term Beluran MP from Sabah, Datuk Ronald Kiandee, and Kepong MP Dr Tan Seng Giaw, a candidate proposed by the opposition, would also be vying for the posts.
"This is the first time an internal election will be conducted to elect the deputy speakers. The winner will be decided by a simple majority,” he told reporters at his office today.
The election for the posts will take place on the first day of the Dewan Rakyat sitting on Monday, April 28.
Wan Junaidi, a lawyer, is seen in political circles as a shoo in for the post because of his legal background and vast political experience.
The election for the posts this time around became necessary because the Barisan Nasional (BN) only has a simple majority in Parliament. It has 140 MPs against the opposition’s 82.
